What are Portfolios?
Portfolios are “visual résumés.” Students and parents select items that showcase documentation of the students’ in-school and out-of-school achievements in these key areas:
- Academic Skills
- Teamwork Skills
- Personal Management Skills
- Work Experience
- Other Interests
What do Portfolios do?
Portfolios demonstrate students' progress toward meeting their educational, career, and personal goals.
How do Portfolios Benefit Students?
Portfolios build students' self-esteem by highlighting individual accomplishments that promote them.
When are Portfolios the most Helpful?
Portfolios aid the students when applying for jobs and college placement/scholarships.
Sample Portfolio Documents
Academic Skills
- Tests, essays or research projects
- Report cards or transcripts
- List of computer software used and sample of each
- Bibliography of books read
Teamwork Skills
- Photographs, reports or evaluations of group projects in school
- Recognition of membership in clubs or groups
- Participation in team-building events (e.g. Ropes Course)
- Documents from on-the-job training or internship
Personal Management Skills
- Career plans
- Record of school or employment attendance
- Ledger showing payments made toward a debt (e.g. car payment)
- Awards or records of community service
- Pages from a personal planner with practice times or work hours designated
Work Experience (Paid and Non-Paid)
- Letters of recommendation from employers
- Pictures while on the job and a description of tasks performed and skills gained
